HOW IT WORKS
IT BEGINS (no obligation)
... with a Business Fitness Assessment (BFA). This is a series of questions covering nine key areas. You self-score yourself and your business on each of the questions, and return the BFA to me. A brief report is prepared and an appointment is scheduled to review the results. The questionnaire can be completed in less than an hour, and the subsequent appointment takes about 2 hours of uninterrupted time.
There is no further obligation past this appointment other than to decide whether you would like to proceed further or not.
I DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE TACTICS
... to engage clients. Those tactics make me uncomfortable, and do not work. All I ask is that as a business owner, you have the power to make a decision one way or the other. If you do not have that authority then we are both wasting time, as the skills and tools I provide are intended for business owners - people who run their own businesses. That said, business owners commonly and understandably consult their spouses or 'significant others.' If that is the case, I require that those individuals also attend the appointment for the BFA review described above.
A DECISION TO PROCEED
... is documented with a written agreement (not a formal contract) that allows either of us to cancel if it simply isn't working for us. The number of monthly meetings, meeting dates and times, venue and fees are contained in this agreement.
...are surprisingly affordable, and geared to the agreed number of meetings per month. Coaching costs less than you would pay a competent assistant ... but do not be mislead by that fact. The positive impact of coaching on the bottom line of your business (and your time) is significant.
...take place on a prescheduled basis at the same time every month. They are typically 1, 2 or 3 times a month with 2 or 3 times being most effective. Meetings last 90 minutes.
THE PROCESS STARTS
... bydefining your overall objective in specific terms. This is a 'big picture' process that typically includes how much you want to make, the eventual scale and scope of your business and when you will retire, sell or otherwise exit the business. Then we define the business in concrete terms, and using the results of the BFA (see the first point, above) identify the areas of weakness that impact on achieving your overall objective. Once we establish SMART Goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound) to close the gaps, the skills coaching and the use of specific tools begins. This coaching is the main focus of the meetings.
THERE WILL BE HOMEWORK
... between meetings. This will include assigned reading and then progress to the specific application of practical skills and tools selected to achieve the SMART goals. My job is to coach you in the skills - it is up to you to apply them so that they become second nature. Practicing these skills and tools will become part of your normal work routine, increasing your results while reducing your effort.
IF THE AGREED WORK IS NOT DONE
... I will give you a kick in the a - - . I am not a consultant; I will be working as your coach. My objective is to change your behaviour, the way you run your business. Fundamental change is difficult but necessary if you want to alter the patterns (and results) that led you to me in the first place. If you do not put in the effort you are wasting time ... and money. I like measurable results and am displeased when agreed actions are not taken. On the other hand, I will recognize and cheer your achievements!
THE PROCESS ENDS
... once you have acquired and learned how to apply the skills and tools, and results begin to accrue. My goal is to work myself out of your life by making permanent and fundamental changes in the way you run your business. And as I noted earlier - if you have achieved that by attending seminars or engaging consultants, stick with it! Otherwise,
